Orlando Pirates continued their impressive pre-season preparations with a spirited 2-1 victory over Cádiz CF at the Marbella Football Center.
The Buccaneers recovered after conceding early against the Spanish Segunda Division side. They responded strongly through goals from Tshepang Moremi and Daniel Msendami.
However, the biggest talking point was the performance of several fresh faces. Three newcomers produced encouraging displays and gave supporters plenty of reasons to feel excited.
Masilela and Mmolai make a strong impression
Young midfielder Simphiwe Masilela delivered one of the standout performances of the match.
The 21-year-old controlled the game’s rhythm from an advanced midfield role. He consistently picked out teammates with clever forward passes.
Furthermore, Masilela remained calm under pressure throughout the contest. His positive approach caused constant problems for the Cádiz defence.
He also won a dangerous free-kick after being fouled just outside the penalty area during the second half.
Masilela earned his senior opportunity after excelling for Orlando Pirates’ DStv Diski Challenge team. He helped the reserves secure their first league title.
Meanwhile, Matome Mmolai also caught the eye with another assured midfield display.
The 23-year-old connected defence and attack with confidence. He also protected possession despite Cádiz’s aggressive pressing.
Mmolai joined the Buccaneers from Leicesterford City in June. Before that, he impressed for JDR Stars in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
Pirates’ midfield depth continues to grow
Mthetheleli Mthiyane completed an impressive night for Orlando Pirates’ new arrivals.
The midfielder entered after halftime and quickly settled into the game. Although he started cautiously, he soon found his rhythm.
His physical presence disrupted Cádiz attacks throughout the closing stages. He also provided valuable protection for the Pirates defence.
The Richards Bay-born midfielder recently signed a three-year contract after leaving Stellenbosch FC.
His excellent previous campaign earned him a Bafana Bafana call-up. He also received a Player of the Season nomination.
Overall, Masilela, Mmolai and Mthiyane strengthened Orlando Pirates’ midfield options ahead of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season.
Next, the Buccaneers face Saudi Pro League giants Al-Ittihad Club in another pre-season friendly on Tuesday, 21 July, at 19:00.
