Today’s Orlando Pirates news wrap focuses on title permutations and Miguel Cardoso’s fixture concerns.
Cardoso criticises fixture congestion amid title race
Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has criticised his side’s congested schedule. He believes it has influenced their recent results. Furthermore, he feels it could benefit Orlando Pirates in the title race.
“I know people say excuses, excuses, but I invite anyone to really look at the calendar that these boys [Sundowns players] have been involved in in the last 21 days. We were not beaten by whoever, but by the calendar.” Cardoso said after his side lost 3-2 at TS Galaxy on Wednesday evening.
Sundowns lost 3-2 to TS Galaxy on Wednesday. Consequently, pressure increased in the title race.
Pirates close in on Betway Premiership glory
Orlando Pirates now close in on a first league title in 14 years. They currently sit on 65 points. Meanwhile, Mamelodi Sundowns hold 68 points after 28 games.
Pirates need four points from their remaining matches to secure the title. However, three points may still be enough. This depends on goal difference swings in final fixtures.
Pirates currently hold a +44 goal difference. Sundowns sit on +36. Therefore, Pirates remain in a strong position.
Pirates next face Durban City at home. Additionally, veteran Makhehlene Makhaula could feature in a potential swansong run-in.
