Outcry in Kezi as Debt Collectors Block Pupils from O-Level Registration
Parents in Kezi, Matobo District, have voiced concern after debt collectors were reportedly stationed at Sontala Secondary School, where they are accused of intimidating families and disrupting learners’ access to examinations.
The situation has triggered tension within the community, with families claiming the move has placed undue pressure on already struggling households.

Fees Dispute Sparks Controversy
According to B-Metro, the dispute centres on the school’s decision, allegedly made by the acting head, to engage private debt collectors to recover unpaid fees.
Parents say the collectors are not only demanding outstanding balances but have also added a collection charge of around 34 percent, significantly increasing the amount owed.
Some families allege they are being threatened with the seizure of livestock if they fail to settle the debts.
Learners Risk Missing Examinations
The most pressing concern is the reported blocking of pupils from registering for upcoming Ordinary Level examinations administered by Zimbabwe School Examinations Council.
Parents claim that students with outstanding fees are being denied registration unless full payment, including the additional charges, is made.
With the registration deadline fast approaching, families fear their children could miss a crucial academic milestone.
Claims of Lack of Communication
Several parents have criticised the school for failing to properly communicate the decision before bringing in debt collectors.
They say there were no prior meetings or written notices to discuss payment challenges or explore possible arrangements.
Many believe the school should have engaged families directly and offered flexible payment plans instead of resorting to what they describe as heavy-handed tactics.
Community Calls for Urgent Intervention
The developments have sparked calls for authorities to intervene and ensure that learners are not unfairly disadvantaged due to financial difficulties.
Parents insist that while they acknowledge the need to pay school fees, the current approach risks harming pupils’ futures and undermining trust between the school and the community.
