Panama Coach Backs Mofokeng for Stardom After Bafana Friendlies

Panama head coach Thomas Christiansen has hailed South Africa’s emerging talent following two international friendlies against Bafana Bafana, singling out rising star Relebohile Mofokeng for special praise.

The Central American side toured South Africa as part of their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, using the fixtures as a key test ahead of the global showpiece set to be hosted across North America.

Competitive Series Ends in Split Results

The two-match series delivered tightly contested encounters, beginning with a 1-1 draw at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Panama, however, edged the second fixture 2-1 at Cape Town’s DHL Stadium, handing South Africa their first home defeat under head coach Hugo Broos.

Despite the loss, several Bafana players left a strong impression on the visitors.

Relebohile Mofokeng Earns Special Praise

Christiansen reserved his highest praise for Mofokeng, describing the Orlando Pirates winger as a player with the ability to influence matches at the highest level.

“Mofokeng is a very good player; he can make the difference. He is fast, technically strong, and possesses the vision to deliver key passes—a vital player for the future,” said Christiansen.

The youngster featured prominently across both matches, coming off the bench to inject energy in the first game before earning a starting role in the second. His pace, creativity and attacking intent consistently troubled the Panamanian defence.

Rising Star at Club Level

Mofokeng’s international performances add to an already impressive club career with Orlando Pirates.

The winger has surpassed 100 appearances for the Buccaneers, contributing 16 goals and 19 assists, while also collecting multiple domestic honours, including three consecutive MTN8 titles.

This season, he has played a central role in Pirates’ push to challenge Mamelodi Sundowns for the league title, as they look to end their rivals’ long-standing dominance.

Balanced Bafana Squad Impresses

Beyond Mofokeng, Christiansen also highlighted the overall balance within the South African squad.

He pointed to the experience and attacking threat of Lyle Foster, the reliability of goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, and the work rate of the midfield unit.

According to the Panama coach, the combination of technical quality, defensive solidity and attacking options positions South Africa as a competitive side on the international stage.
