Pastor Alistar Chibanda Apologises For Cyberbullying Doek & Slay, Echoes Previous Nyaradzo ‘Apolo-Jersey’

Firebrand Harare Pastor Alistar Chibanda has issued a sweeping public apology for cyberbullying the women’s event brand Doek & Slay, following his arrest by police. This dramatic climbdown marks the second time in three years the controversial activist preacher has been forced into a significant public apology and retraction, starkly echoing his 2022 ‘Apolo-Jersey’ controversy with Nyaradzo Funeral Services.

Facing a formal defamation case, Chibanda posted his apology online, expressing unequivocal remorse for a social media campaign against Doek & Slay, where he used derogatory language about women attendees.

“I would like to unreservedly apologize for my actions in relation to the Doek & Slay event, particularly for engaging in cyber bullying and for making derogatory and hurtful statements about women who attend the event. My words and conduct were wrong, disrespectful, and completely unjustified. There is no excuse for cyber bullying or for language that demeans or disrespects women.”

The Shadow Of The ‘Apolo-Jersey’

This public retraction is a direct replay of a previous scandal. In late 2022, Chibanda led a viral campaign accusing Nyaradzo Funeral Services of fraud, which prompted a regulatory review. He then abruptly deleted all posts and published a humbling retraction, claiming he was misled by false information sent to his inbox.

“We regret there are people who invaded my inbox with comments against Nyaradzo Group with unfounded malicious allegations of business malpractices which are not factual. I have gone through the tweets and I realized that the comments I made were factually incorrect and defaming.”

That U-turn, was ridiculed online as an “Apolo-Jersey” moment—a forced, performative apology.

A Damaged Legacy And Legal Reckoning

The latest apology has sparked fresh criticism, highlighting a clear pattern in Chibanda’s methods. However, the Doek & Slay case introduces a more serious element: criminal charges. Where Nyaradzo opted against legal action, Doek & Slay are pursuing prosecution for defamation, marking a significant escalation.

The outcome of this legal battle remains pending. Yet Pastor Alistar Chibanda’s legacy is now cemented by a cycle of public allegations followed by abject apologies, leaving the public to question what he truly stands for.
