Couple Walking on Road Island Among First Victims in Seke Road Crash That Killed 17

As the nation mourns the devastating Seke horror crash, it has emerged that a couple who had been walking along the island dividing the dual carriageway were the first victims to die in the tragic accident that ultimately claimed 17 lives.

The man and his wife died on the spot after they were struck by the haulage truck

Haulage Truck Hits Pedestrian Couple Before Crashing into Kombi, Police Confirm

According to the police, the truck was travelling toward the Harare Central Business District when the driver lost control, encroached into the oncoming traffic lane and hit the couple.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms that 17 people died after a haulage truck travelling towards the Harare Central Business District with two occupants on board lost control and veered onto the oncoming lane. The truck hit two pedestrians who were walking on the island of the road. The pedestrians died on the spot,” the ZRP said in a statement.

Truck Slams into Kombi, Crushing 15 More Victims

Moments after hitting the couple, the truck collided head-on with a Nissan Caravan kombi headed in the opposite direction toward Chitungwiza. The kombi was in the final stages of its journey from the Harare CBD.

Police confirmed that 15 people in the kombi, including the driver, died on the spot.

The impact dragged the kombi off the road, and the truck overturned, landing on top of the minibus and trapping all the passengers underneath its massive weight

Only Three Survive; Truck Driver Hospitalised

Miraculously, three passengers in the kombi survived the crash and were rushed to Chitungwiza Hospital for treatment.

The truck driver, identified as Desire Madariko (56), sustained neck injuries and was also taken to hospital. A passenger who had been in the truck also survived the accident.

10 Females and 7 Males Confirmed Dead

Authorities have confirmed that the deceased include 10 females and 7 males.

The bodies were transferred to the Chitungwiza Hospital mortuary for post-mortem, while the injured remain under medical care at the same facility.
