Alois Bunjira Tips Pitso Mosimane As Best Foreign Coach For Warriors
Former Warriors star Alois Bunjira has tipped South African coach Pitso Mosimane as the best foreign option to take charge of the Zimbabwe national team. He also put forward Norman Mapeza as his preferred local candidate to replace the recently fired German national Michael Nees.
Nees was dismissed on Wednesday night, 22 October 2025, after a string of poor results, during which he managed only two wins in 16 matches, both against Namibia.
Bunjira Weighs In
Writing on his official Facebook page, Bunjira made his recommendations clear.
He said:
“If ZIFA are considering a local coach, then Norman Mapeza is the right man. But if the association wants a foreigner, I would go for Pitso Mosimane. He has a proven track record of success and is highly qualified. He also knows a lot of our players as well. Pitso for me.”
Bunjira, once known as “Cross Cross” during his playing days, went further to suggest a technical setup.
“If Norman is reappointed, then Kaitano Tembo should be in the technical team together with Joel Luphahla and Lloyd Chitembwe. I can also be the strikers’ coach,” he added with humour.
Who Is Pitso Mosimane?
Pitso Mosimane, widely regarded as one of Africa’s most successful coaches, has won major titles in South Africa and abroad. He guided Mamelodi Sundowns to the CAF Champions League in 2016, becoming the first South African coach to achieve that feat.
He later joined Egyptian giants Al Ahly, where he lifted back-to-back CAF Champions League titles in 2020 and 2021, cementing his reputation as a continental powerhouse.
Mosimane also had a stint in Saudi Arabia with Al Ahli and more recently managed in the United Arab Emirates. Known for his tactical acumen and ability to develop players, he has earned respect across African football circles.
His experience with top African clubs and international exposure has made him a strong candidate for any national team seeking proven success. Bunjira’s endorsement highlights the weight of Mosimane’s track record.
AFCON Preparations
The pressure is mounting as the Warriors prepare for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), scheduled for December in Morocco. The new coach will have little time to settle before the crucial tournament.
ZIFA President Nqobile Magwizi confirmed the team’s next fixtures on Thursday, 23 October 2025.
“As ZIFA, we would like to announce that we are playing friendly matches against Qatar and Algeria in November. We chose the two teams because we want fixtures that will truly test our mettle. Qatar and Algeria represent the calibre of opposition we must face to measure our readiness for the upcoming AFCON. So the choice of these matches was deliberate,” Magwizi said.
The international break runs from 10 to 18 November.
In July, Zimbabwe also faced Niger and Benin in friendlies as part of their build-up to the continental showpiece.
What Next For The Warriors?
With the clock ticking towards AFCON, the question remains whether ZIFA will turn to a trusted local hand like Mapeza or bring in Mosimane, one of Africa’s most decorated coaches. The decision will determine how the Warriors step into Morocco in December.
