Police Address Claims That Captain Sign Patsikadova Was Carrying US$10,000 And Somali Nationals
Police have addressed claims that the late Captain Sign Patsikadova was carrying US$10,000 and that Somali nationals survived the Mbuya Nehanda ferry disaster before disappearing. The allegations emerged as investigators continue probing the August 11, 2026 tragedy on Lake Kariba, which claimed 97 lives. Police have said they have found no evidence supporting either claim.
Police Respond To Sign Patsikadova US$10,000 Claim
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said investigators were concerned about allegations being circulated without supporting evidence.
Nyathi specifically addressed the claim that Patsikadova, who was 59 and died in the disaster, had US$10,000 (approximately R165,000) with him.
“As the police, we have no information or evidence whatsoever to substantiate that claim.”
He urged anyone with evidence to take it to investigators rather than circulate the allegation.
“If you have evidence, bring it to the police. Do not circulate unverified claims.”
Police Dismiss Somali Survivor Claims
Police also rejected claims that between 10 and 15 Somali nationals were aboard the ferry, survived the disaster and later disappeared.
“Again, we have no evidence to substantiate these allegations,” Nyathi said.
The investigation is examining passenger numbers, ticketing, loading and revenue records. Police have said a manifest given to Patsikadova listed 120 passengers, while their investigations suggest more than 150 people may have been aboard.
The police warning comes as investigators continue working to establish what happened during the ferry’s final journey.
Nyathi said witnesses should report what they personally saw rather than repeat unverified information.
“If you witnessed something, report what you witnessed. Do not manufacture information. Do not repeat rumours as facts.”
The police position is that the claims about Patsikadova’s alleged cash and the supposed Somali survivors remain unsubstantiated.
