SDA Evangelist Marufu Arrested Over Alleged Cyberbullying Of Female Churchmates

A Seventh-day Adventist evangelist has been arrested after three female church members accused him of cyberbullying over a social media post they say damaged their reputations. The case, which was confirmed by police on Monday, 29 June, has sparked fresh discussion around the use of social media and online conduct within church communities as investigations continue.

SDA Evangelist Arrested After Women File Cyberbullying Complaint

The Herald reports that evangelist Simbarashe Marufu was arrested after three women lodged a complaint with police, alleging that he uploaded a video of them to social media accompanied by a caption they considered insulting and mocking. The women reportedly said they had originally recorded the video while preparing to preach.

According to the publication, the caption included the words:

“When shepherds have become wolves you, (the) pastor’s wife, your husband has been exposed… for a woman is the glory of man. Muchavaziva nezvibereko zvavo (You shall know them by their fruits).”

The women alleged the post attracted negative comments directed at them. One of the complainants reportedly urged fellow church members to intervene before the matter was reported to Marlborough Police Station on Saturday, 27 June 2026.

The Herald also reports that after learning a police report had been made, Marufu allegedly consulted his lawyer and later posted a public apology.

In the apology, he reportedly said:

“Sincere apologies to those who felt insulted or offended by my post and any inconveniences caused. Let the gospel wheels move in love. Bless you everyone.”

Police Confirm Investigation As Phone Seized

Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed that authorities are investigating the matter.

Inspector Chakanza said:

“Police are investigating a cyberbullying case involving a local church leader against his fellow churchmates. His cellphone, which he used, is now in the hands of police as investigations continue.”

The Herald further reports that one of the complainants, who spoke anonymously, claimed this was not the first time Marufu had allegedly used social media to criticise fellow church members. The publication says the three women also intend to pursue legal action against Marufu as well as other individuals they claim insulted them online.

Marufu Is Also A Member Of Dare ReMachinda

Marufu is also known as one of the members of Dare ReMachinda, a Zimbabwean men’s forum that promotes responsible fatherhood, accountability and positive male role models.

Just days before his arrest, Marufu appeared on the platform alongside other panellists during one of its discussions. He has also been featured at some of the forum’s public events.
