All Vehicle Categories Under Scrutiny
According to police, the operation is not limited to a specific group of motorists. Private vehicles, Government cars, company fleets and public service vehicles are all being inspected as officers tighten compliance checks.
Police say the initiative was triggered by growing concerns that some motorists deliberately remove number plates to avoid being traced.
This practice has complicated investigations and enforcement efforts when vehicles are involved in crimes or traffic violations.
Vehicles Linked to Criminal Activities
Authorities say vehicles without identification plates have increasingly appeared in serious criminal cases.
Investigations have connected such vehicles to armed robberies, kidnappings and hit-and-run accidents. They are also frequently involved in dangerous road behaviour, including driving against traffic, ignoring red lights and violating lane rules.
Police say the ongoing crackdown is meant to restore order on the roads and ensure all vehicles are properly identifiable.
No Exceptions in Enforcement
In a statement, police confirmed that the operation is underway throughout the country and warned that enforcement will be strict.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms that a countrywide operation is currently underway targeting vehicles moving on the roads without registration number plates and those illegally fitted with sirens, blue lights, bar lights, beacons and other unauthorised gadgets,” reads the statement.
Police said any vehicle found without number plates will be seized immediately and only released once proper registration procedures have been completed.
“All illegal sirens, blue lights, bar lights, beacons and related gadgets will be removed on the spot with no excuses being entertained by the Zimbabwe Republic Police,” police said.
