Headmaster Attacked After Collecting Results
The school’s headmaster, 49-year-old Tizai Gwazhi, was attacked and robbed after he had collected the results from the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) offices in Mutare earlier in the day.
After attending a post-results evaluation workshop, he later made several stops in the city before heading to Dangamvura, where he intended to spend the night at a friend’s home.
Unfamiliar with the area, Gwazhi was forced to disembark at MaPipe after missing his intended stop. As he walked through Area 3 near a local church late that evening, he was ambushed by two men who emerged from a nearby maize field, tripped him, and forcibly took his satchel before fleeing.
Gwazhi, who sought refuge at a nearby church after the attack, reported the matter the following morning, triggering the chain of events that led to the arrest and recovery of the results.
Police Tip-Off Leads to Arrest
Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, confirmed the robbery and subsequent recovery of the stolen items.
He said detectives received crucial information linking a suspect to the sale of a cellphone matching the description of the one taken from Gwazhi.
Police moved swiftly and arrested MacCthy Tshuma of Gimboki South. Although the cellphone had already been sold, Tshuma led officers to where it had been disposed of and further revealed where the stolen examination documents had been dumped.
Results Found in Refuse Bin
Following the arrest, police recovered the missing O-Level results slips and other school documents from a rubbish bin at a house in Area 3, Dangamvura.
Investigations revealed that Tshuma and his accomplice, only identified as “Maradona”, had discarded the papers after realising their limited resale value.
Additional items stolen during the robbery included school financial records, official stamps, work-related documents and personal effects.
Investigation Continues as Community Breathes Easy
Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said investigations are ongoing as police pursue the second suspect.
He praised the cooperation of the public, adding that the quick recovery prevented potential disruption to the school and its learners.
