Police Shoot Dead Two Suspected Armed Robbers in Zimbabwe Shootouts

Police have shot dead two suspected armed robbers during separate confrontations in Inyathi and Harare.

The incidents occurred on 6 October 2026, according to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).

Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the shootings on Thursday, 8 October. He also reaffirmed the force’s determination to combat armed robbery across the country.

Inyathi Suspect Linked to Four Murder and Robbery Cases

Police shot Richmond Thomas Ndlovu near Kenilworth Turn-Off along the Bulawayo-Nkayi Road. The shooting occurred after he allegedly attempted to disarm officers at an isolated location.

“He was shot in the leg and stomach,” Nyathi said.

Officers recovered a Star pistol containing seven rounds and a Colombian knife. However, Ndlovu died while being transported to hospital.

The confrontation followed a police operation at Ndlovu’s home in Exchange Village, Inyathi, on 5 October. During that operation, officers reportedly recovered three pistols.

His wife, Tryphine Phuti, 29, had allegedly fled their home after Ndlovu threatened to kill her.

Furthermore, police linked Ndlovu to four murder and robbery cases committed between 5 June and 27 September. The alleged offences occurred in and around Inyathi.

One case involved a 5 June attack at a service station in Mahamba Business Centre. During that incident, robbers allegedly killed a security guard.

Another case involved a supermarket robbery at Badala Business Centre. The suspects allegedly escaped with US$18,000 in cash.

Harare Suspect Dies After Shootout With Detectives

Meanwhile, detectives shot dead Cosmas Mashavira, 30, during a separate confrontation in Harare.

The shooting occurred at the intersection of Rosemary Drive and Beatrice Road. Mashavira allegedly exchanged gunfire with detectives before police shot him.

Officers recovered a 9mm Retay pistol containing one round in its magazine. Mashavira died upon arrival at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital.

According to Nyathi, the incident followed the arrest of three alleged accomplices. Police identified them as Shame Mwedzi, 44, Leonard Chamboko, 45, and Vincent Magadhi, 50.

Detectives arrested the three men in connection with a series of robberies across Harare and Chitungwiza. The reported offences involved the theft of US$1,900 in cash and other valuables.

Nyathi warned suspected criminals against confronting officers during police operations.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police warns criminals against attacking or attempting to disarm police officers on duty,” Nyathi said.

He also encouraged members of the public to share information about suspected criminals and illegal firearms.
