President Mnangagwa Orders Emergency Response After Deadly South Africa Bus Accident
President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared a State of Disaster following the devastating bus crash in South Africa that claimed the lives of 11 Zimbabweans.
The declaration, made under Section 27(1) of the Civil Protection Act, enables authorities to release emergency resources and coordinate efforts with South African officials in response to one of the deadliest road tragedies involving Zimbabwean citizens outside the country in recent years.

Government Activates Emergency Response
The decision follows the fatal accident involving a Munhenzva Transport Services bus that was travelling from Cape Town to Harare. The coach crashed near Trompsburg in South Africa’s Free State province on July 31.
According to Government, the disaster declaration allows various departments to work together to ensure the deceased are returned home while survivors receive the support they need.
In a statement, Local Government and Public Works Minister Daniel Garwe said President Mnangagwa had expressed sympathy to the affected families.
“His Excellency, President Mnangagwa, has conveyed his deepest condolences to the bereaved families and extended his heartfelt sympathies to all those who have lost loved ones,” said Minister Garwe.
He added that the President also wished those injured in the crash “a swift and full recovery.”
Repatriation And Survivor Support Underway
Minister Garwe said the Civil Protection Department had been instructed to work closely with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade as well as Zimbabwe’s Embassy in Pretoria to coordinate the return of the victims’ bodies and provide assistance to injured passengers.
The Government also acknowledged the role played by South African emergency personnel, medical teams and Zimbabwean consular officials, thanking them for responding quickly after the crash.
Death Toll Rises To 11
Authorities confirmed that 11 Zimbabweans lost their lives in the accident. The victims include one adult man, five adult women and five children.
Several other passengers sustained injuries, with some reported to be in serious condition. They are receiving treatment at Pelonomi and Universitas hospitals in Bloemfontein.
Government said it would continue working with South African authorities and release additional verified information as investigations into the crash progress.
