ZRP Arrest Armed Robber Daniel Munyanyi For Killing 2 CID Detectives In Zaka, After Barely 2 Days On The Run
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the arrest of armed robbery suspect Daniel Munyanyi, the man accused of shooting dead two CID detectives in Zaka over the weekend, after he was cornered by members of the public while hiding out in Bikita.
The suspect, who had been on the run for barely 48 hours following the fatal shooting of Detective Sergeant Bernard Chimbeke and Detective Constable Casper Antonio McKenzie Chitsowe, was finally cornered on Monday afternoon, bringing a swift end to one of the most brazen attacks on the police force in recent memory.
Community Holds Murder Suspect For Police
In a statement that has been met with widespread relief, the Zimbabwe Republic Police took to X to announce the capture of the fugitive. According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police, Munyanyi was apprehended in the Nyika Area, Bikita, Masvingo, late on Monday afternoon. In a surprising twist that underscores the community’s disgust with the killings, it was not a specialised police unit that made the arrest, but ordinary members of the public.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of Daniel Munyanyi (50) at Nyika Area, Bikita, Masvingo, while hiding late this afternoon.”
“The arrest was effected by members of the public.”
The police statement confirmed that the weapon used in the shooting of the two detectives has also been recovered. The recovery of the firearm closes a dangerous chapter, as Munyanyi was considered heavily armed and volatile. The ZRP was quick to commend the bravery of the locals who intervened.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police commends the people in Nyika for working together with the police to effect the arrest.”
Massacre At Dawn In Zaka Village
The arrest brings a measure of justice to the families of the two officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. The horrifying incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, 1 March 2026. According to details previously released by national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, a team of detectives from the CID Homicide Division in Harare had tracked Munyanyi to his rural home at Ndume Village, under Chief Ndanga, in Zaka.
The detectives were closing in on the suspect, who was wanted in connection with a string of armed robbery cases in Harare and Zaka. However, as they cornered him at around 5 AM, Munyanyi allegedly pulled out a firearm and opened fire on the officers.
The gunfire in the quiet village ripped through the morning silence, leaving Detective Sergeant Bernard Chimbeke, 37, and Detective Constable Casper Antonio McKenzie Chitsowe, 43, fatally wounded. The attack did not end there. Three other detectives were caught in the hail of bullets and sustained serious injuries.
Law enforcement sources have painted a grim picture of the scene, revealing the extent of the violence the surviving officers endured. One detective was shot in the thigh, while another was struck in both legs. The third officer suffered devastating injuries to a leg, which ultimately resulted in an amputation.
With Munyanyi now in custody and the murder weapon seized, investigations are ongoing as the police force mourns its fallen comrades.
