Rassie Erasmus has challenged his emerging Springboks to embrace the pressure of facing New Zealand.
The Springboks begin their four-Test Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series against the All Blacks on Saturday.
For several players, the occasion will bring an entirely different level of pressure.
Erasmus understands that Test rugby against New Zealand demands more than physical preparation.
Instead, he wants inexperienced players to trust themselves and execute their roles without becoming overwhelmed.
Erasmus wants newcomers to embrace the occasion
Paul de Villiers now faces one of rugby’s biggest challenges after earning selection against New Zealand.
The flanker replaces Siya Kolisi, who misses the opener while recovering from a hamstring issue.
However, Erasmus believes De Villiers has earned his opportunity through his performances.
The young forward previously impressed during his Test opportunities and has developed rapidly within the Springbok system.
Therefore, Erasmus has shown that experience alone will not determine his selections.
He has repeatedly used pressure matches to assess how younger players respond against quality opposition.
Earlier this year, he handed four players their Test debuts against Wales.
That approach reflects his belief that players must eventually prove themselves against the strongest teams.
A different challenge against New Zealand
Nevertheless, facing the All Blacks brings another level of intensity and expectation.
New Zealand arrives after impressive victories over the Stormers, Sharks and Bulls during their South African tour.
The All Blacks have also selected a strong squad for Saturday’s opening Test.
Consequently, Erasmus knows his less experienced players cannot afford to become distracted by the occasion.
Instead, they must focus on their individual responsibilities while contributing to the Springboks’ collective plan.
The coach has also backed his squad depth throughout the season.
His selections have shown a willingness to test players before major international assignments.
Now, that strategy reaches its biggest examination against the All Blacks.
For De Villiers and others, Saturday therefore represents more than another Test match.
It is an opportunity to show they can handle rugby’s biggest stage.
And Erasmus appears ready to give them that chance.
