RBZ Rolls Out Nationwide Awareness Campaign to Promote New ZiG Notes
The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe has intensified efforts to promote the use of the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) currency by launching a nationwide awareness campaign focused on the upgraded banknotes.
The initiative began in Harare Metropolitan Province on Tuesday, where captains of industry and commerce pledged their backing for the structured currency.
Authorities say the campaign will roll out across all provinces ahead of the official circulation of the new notes.

Matabeleland North Takes the Lead
A high-level stakeholder engagement meeting was held in Lupane, bringing together government officials, local authorities and traditional leaders.
Participants committed to disseminating accurate information about the ZiG notes throughout their communities.
Officials from the central bank outlined the security features embedded in the upgraded “Big Five” ZiG banknote series, as well as the policy framework supporting the currency.
They stressed the importance of transparency and continuous public engagement to build trust.
Provincial Leaders Pledge Support
Director of Economics in the Office of the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Matabeleland North, George Mukwakwami, assured the central bank of the province’s full cooperation.
He said government structures at grassroots level had been activated to ensure the campaign reaches every community.
Lupane District Development Coordinator, Ennety Sithole, said awareness programmes would be incorporated into ward meetings and development forums. She added that digital platforms such as WhatsApp groups would also be used to ensure residents receive reliable information and are not misled.
Councils and Chiefs Join the Campaign
Local authorities signalled their readiness to reinforce the message through service delivery platforms. Kusile Rural District Council chief executive officer Sifiso Hadebe said council meetings and community engagements would be used to explain the benefits and features of the upgraded notes.
Traditional leaders also committed to driving the message at village level. Chief Menyezwa of Lupane District said village gatherings would be used to encourage communities to embrace the currency, while Chief Mabhikwa pledged to work closely with government officials and village heads to cascade information widely.
Growing Backing for ZiG
The RBZ says the awareness campaign reflects government’s commitment to its devolution agenda by ensuring provinces play an active role in economic programmes.
Since its introduction in April 2024, ZiG has gradually gained ground in the financial market. Authorities report that reserves backing the currency now exceed US$1.2 billion, a development they say strengthens confidence in the domestic unit.
Officials maintain that the upgraded notes align with international monetary trends and are designed to enhance security, usability and public trust as the country continues efforts to stabilise its currency system.
