President Mnangagwa Launches Richest Trophy In History: Zimbabwe Unveils $25 Million ZIFA Munhumutapa Challenge Cup

President Emmerson Mnangagwa today launched the richest trophy in Zimbabwean football history, unveiling the US$25 million (approximately R460 million) ZIFA Munhumutapa Challenge Cup at the Celebration Centre in Harare.

The tournament, backed by the President’s office, will see over 500 teams from across the country battle for glory over the next five years. Thousands of football fans, players, and officials packed the venue to witness what many are calling an epoch-changing moment for the sport in Zimbabwe.

President Confirms Jaw-Dropping US$25 Million Investment

Taking to the podium to a rapturous standing ovation, President Mnangagwa put an end to months of speculation by confirming the monumental financial injection into local football. The President, who is the principal sponsor of the tournament, laid bare the intricate details that will reshape the sport in the nation.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa confirmed:

“It’s no longer hearsay. The ZIFA Munhumutapa Challenge Cup will be sponsored to the tune of US$25million over the next five years.”

He added: “I am a football supporter myself. Football is a universal language that transcends every barrier.”

ZIFA President Nqobile Magwizi took a moment to explain the strategic importance of the initiative, linking it to the government’s broader development vision.

Mr Magwizi stated:

“The launch of the Munhumutapa Cup is aligned with the National Development Strategy 2 and the vision of leaving no one and no place behind. The dignity with which Zimbabwean football advances is a reflection of the President’s able leadership.”

The football community received a massive global endorsement when a video message from FIFA President Gianni Infantino was played on the huge screens.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino saluted the initiative, saying: “See you soon.”

Government spokesperson Nick Mangwana provided further context on the tournament’s significance, posting on X:

“The last ZIFA Cup competition was staged as the Unity Cup in 2005, before today’s historic launch of the Munhumutapa Cup. This new tournament, the largest knock-out event in Zimbabwean football, will embrace every level of the game.”

Trophies Unveiled: A Nod To Great Zimbabwe

Adding cultural prestige to the financial windfall, the trophies for the competition were unveiled, designed to reflect the nation’s rich heritage. Crafted by renowned Zimbabwean luxury brand Patrick Mavros, the designs draw direct inspiration from the ancient Great Zimbabwe ruins.

Mr Mangwana detailed the artistic choices,

“Unveiling of the Munhumutapa Cup trophies, designed in the likeness of the Great Zimbabwe Conical Tower. The men’s trophy is engraved with a crocodile pattern, while the women’s trophy carries a distinct crocodile engraving. Crafted by Patrick Mavros, a renowned Zimbabwean luxury brand.”

Inclusivity and A Path to Africa

The scope of the tournament is unprecedented in Zimbabwean football history. It is designed as a giant knockout event that mirrors the FA Cup format, ensuring that small village teams have a shot at facing top-flight giants. The tournament incorporates women’s football, futsal, beach soccer, and youth development at its core.

Mr Mangwana elaborated on the expansive nature of the competition, stating:

“The Munhumutapa Cup, under the banner of ZIFA, is a national programme that reflects the spirit of inclusivity by bringing together men and women, boys and girls, across Premiership clubs, lower divisions, Area Zones, social teams, and grassroots sides. Junior teams from the Under-14 and Under-16 categories will also participate.”

Beyond the domestic glory, the tournament offers a tangible pathway onto the continental stage.

Mr Mangwana confirmed:

“The senior men’s champions of the Munhumutapa Cup will earn the distinguished honour of representing Zimbabwe in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Confederation Cup. The women’s and junior competitions will also receive dedicated investment.”

The launch, however, was not without its critics. Opposition figure Fadzayi Mahere raised questions regarding the funding and symbolism of the new tournament.

Advocate Fadzayi Mahere queried on X:

“Is this a @ZANUPF_Official soccer tournament? Who is running it? Who is sponsoring it? Where did the US$25 million come from? Who chose the name ‘Mumhumutapa’? What does this name mean in this context? We need new leaders.”

For the thousands of players across the nation’s dusty streets and rural areas, the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup represents a dream that just got a lot closer.
