South African rugby received sad news on Tuesday. Former Eastern Province No.8 Charles Kleinbooi passed away this week. He was known as a tough, skilful forward with a powerful kicking boot. His strength and determination defined his playing career.
Kleinbooi was born on 31 October 1955 in Schauderville, Gqeberha. His rugby journey started during the 1960s at primary school. Later, he joined St Marks RFC in 1964. He represented the club across all levels.
By 1976, he became a regular first-team player. Then, in 1977, he earned selection for Eastern Province.
A Stalwart of Eastern Province Rugby
Kleinbooi soon became a respected figure in South African rugby. Fans affectionately called him “Berg.” He played for Eastern Province from 1977 to 1990. During that period, he wore the famous red and black hooped jersey.
Furthermore, he captained the team in 1985. He also helped the side win the SA Cup in the early 1980s. Between 1982 and 1987, he received SARU colours. As a result, he represented South Africa internationally.
During that time, he played alongside several notable players. These included Makhaya Jack, Peter Jooste, Gary Boshoff and Irvin October. He also shared the field with Allister Coetzee, Eric Sauls and Zola Yeye.
A Legacy Beyond the Field
After retiring, Kleinbooi continued serving the sport. He became Public Relations Officer for his club and union. Additionally, he served on the Eastern Province Executive. Therefore, he remained deeply involved in rugby administration.
His sporting talent extended beyond rugby. He also represented Eastern Province in soccer, swimming, water polo and life-saving.
“Charles’ contribution to South African rugby, both on and off the field, has left an indelible mark on our sport and our nation and we honour his memory and celebrate the legacy he leaves behind,” said SA Rugby president Mark Alexander.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, loved ones, friends and all who were touched by his remarkable life. May we all find comfort in remembering his passion, dedication and the unity he inspired within our rugby community.”
