Robert Mugabe Junior Accused Of Leading Zimbabwe Drug Syndicate
The son of Zimbabwe’s late former president is at the centre of a major police investigation, with authorities alleging he is not just a user but the leader of a drug peddling syndicate. Robert Mugabe Junior, 33, spent a second night in custody after his arrest on 1 October 2025, with police now confirming the bust of an entire network allegedly linked to him.
Drugs seized as syndicate busted
The Zimbabwe Republic Police issued a press statement on 2 October 2025, confirming the wider arrests. Besides Robert Mugabe Junior, the syndicate reportedly includes Mitchel Jackson (28), Simbarashe Kaseke (37), Wellington Icube (19), Phillip Munetsi Chiyangwa (26), and Tanaka Kashamba (25).
According to Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the recovery was significant.
“The haul from the syndicate consisted of 25 sachets of Indo hybrid dagga and six ecstasy pills.”
This official account contrasts with the details presented in court for Mugabe Junior’s personal case, where prosecutors spoke of a smaller stash.
The arrest that triggered the investigation took place during a traffic stop in central Harare. Mugabe was intercepted while driving a silver Honda Fit against oncoming traffic along 2nd Street Extension.
Prosecutor Mandirasa Chigumira explained to the Harare Magistrates Court:
“Upon searching the accused’s black sling bag, police officers recovered two sachets of dagga, one pack of Rizla, and a white dagga crusher.”
The dagga was weighed and found to be 2 grams, with a street value of US$30 (approximately R550). Chigumira added that Mugabe Junior refused to sign the seizure receipt issued by officers.
A history of legal trouble for Mugabe Junior
This is not Mugabe Junior’s first clash with the law. In February 2023, he was arrested “during a drunken rampage at a house party after smashing vehicle windscreens and destroying household property.” The case was later withdrawn after he paid compensation.
He is being represented in the current matter by lawyer Ashiel Mugiya, who also acted for him during the 2023 case. At the time, Mugiya argued that prosecutors had not conducted a thorough investigation.
The current allegations mark a departure from that incident, with prosecutors now pointing to what they describe as a structured drug operation rather than an isolated act of disorderly conduct.
A family under scrutiny
The latest arrest is not the only brush with the law for the Mugabe family. His younger brother, Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, was taken into custody on 1 July 2025. He was accused of leading an armed group that attacked workers at a mine near the family estate in Mazowe.
The incident reportedly left several employees hospitalised.
Robert Mugabe Junior was remanded in custody by magistrate Lisa Mutendereki, with his bail hearing scheduled for Friday, 3 October 2025. The court’s decision will determine whether he is released or remains in custody as police continue their investigation into the alleged syndicate.
