BMW Recalls Over 12,000 Vehicles in South Africa Due to Starter Motor Defect
The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has announced a major safety recall of 12,491 BMW vehicles across six different model ranges sold in South Africa since 2016.
Fault Linked to Starter Motor Defect
According to the NCC, the recall involves a defect in the starter motor that could allow water to enter the unit, leading to corrosion. This corrosion can cause the engine to fail to start and, in severe cases, result in a short circuit and local overheating of the starter unit.
Affected Models
The recall affects the BMW 3 Series (G20), 4 Series (G22), 5 Series (G30), Z4 (G29), X3 (G01), and X4 (G02) models.
All vehicles included in the recall were manufactured and sold in South Africa from 2016 onwards.
BMW to Contact Vehicle Owners
BMW Group South Africa has confirmed that it will directly contact all affected owners to arrange for the necessary inspections and repairs.
The company urged customers to respond promptly to the recall notification once received to ensure their vehicles meet safety and compliance standards.
NCC Urges Cooperation from Consumers
The NCC emphasized that vehicle recalls are essential safety measures designed to protect consumers and prevent potential hazards.
The Commission encouraged affected motorists to fully cooperate with BMW’s recall process once contacted.

VW Recalls Amarok Bakkies Over Braking System Defect
Last month, Volkswagen South Africa issued a safety recall for more than 300 Amarok bakkies after discovering a braking defect that could pose a serious risk to drivers.
According to the automaker, the fault may cause a loss of braking assistance, forcing motorists to apply greater pressure on the pedal to stop their vehicles — a problem that could be dangerous in emergency situations.
The National Consumer Commission (NCC) confirmed the recall and urged affected Amarok owners to take their vehicles to any authorised Volkswagen dealership, where the repairs will be carried out free of charge.
“Product recalls are vital to ensure safety, and prompt action is essential,” the NCC said, adding that it will monitor the process in line with the Consumer Protection Act.
