Samuel Eto’o Handed Four-Match Ban and $20,000 Fine After AFCON Quarterfinal Incident

Samuel Eto’o Handed Four-Match Ban and $20,000 Fine After AFCON Quarterfinal Incident

Samuel Eto’o, the president of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT), has been suspended for four matches and fined US$20,000 following his conduct during Cameroon’s AFCON quarterfinal encounter against Morocco.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) took disciplinary action after Eto’o reportedly reacted angrily to officiating decisions during the high-stakes match, an incident that unfolded in full view of senior football officials.

Outburst in Presence of Top Officials

According to reports, Eto’o expressed his frustration over refereeing decisions while seated close to CAF president Patrice Motsepe, FIFA dignitaries, and Moroccan Football Federation president Fouzi Lekjaa. He was seen gesturing angrily in the direction of Lekjaa during the game, drawing widespread attention.

While CAF has not officially detailed the specific incident that led to the sanction, Eto’o’s behaviour remains the most prominent issue linked to the Morocco-Cameroon quarterfinal.

FECAFOOT Challenges CAF Decision

In a statement released on Wednesday, FECAFOOT confirmed it had taken note of CAF’s disciplinary ruling but questioned the basis of the punishment. The federation said the decision “lacks any explicit justification” and raised concerns about the process used to reach the verdict.

FECAFOOT also criticised the speed at which the sanction was imposed, arguing that the expedited procedure undermined the fundamental principles of a fair disciplinary hearing.

CAF Investigates Multiple Matches

CAF confirmed earlier this week that it was investigating incidents arising from two AFCON quarterfinal matches — Cameroon versus Morocco, and Algeria versus Nigeria. However, the governing body did not specify which incidents were under review in either fixture.

Federation Backs Its President

Despite the suspension, FECAFOOT reiterated its full support for Eto’o, describing its stance as unwavering. The federation reaffirmed its commitment to the principles of credible and fair disciplinary justice within African football.

The development adds another layer of tension to CAF’s management of the tournament, as scrutiny intensifies over officiating standards and disciplinary consistency at AFCON.
