SASSA Implements New eKYC For Social Grant System

The South African Social Security Agency has officially announced the payment schedule for the millions who rely on social grants this September. Payments are slated to commence this week, following the agency’s long-standing and specific order of distribution. This orderly process is designed to manage the immense flow of funds, with over 19 million grants being administered to vulnerable citizens nationwide.

A SASSA representative, emphasising the importance of the schedule, stated,

“We urge all beneficiaries to take careful note of the specific payment dates to avoid unnecessary travel and overcrowding at payment points. The schedule is designed for everyone’s convenience and safety.”

New SASSA Biometric Mandate For All New Applications

In a significant move to modernise its systems, SASSA has announced that, starting from September 1, all new applications for social grants must include the submission of the applicant’s biometric data. This will be captured through a digital process known as an electronic Know Your Client (eKYC) system. This initiative marks a significant shift in how the agency processes and verifies new claims.

The agency clarified the procedure, noting,

“Applications submitted without this crucial biometric enrolment will not be rejected outright but will immediately be placed under review. The applicant will then be formally notified to provide their biometrics to finalise and complete the application process.”

A Push For Enhanced Security and Accountability

The primary driver behind this new technological adoption is the enhancement of the grant system’s integrity. The sophisticated biometric checks are designed to enhance risk controls, creating a significantly more secure and accountable environment for the distribution of state funds. The core function is to provide absolute verification that a grant applicant is a living person at the exact moment of application.

A senior official explained the rationale, saying,

“This new initiative is fundamentally about protecting public funds and ensuring they reach the intended living beneficiaries. It is a critical step towards eliminating potential fraud and enhancing accountability within our vast social security network.”

Beneficiaries can expect their payments to proceed as usual, with the new measures specifically targeting future applicants to the system.
