Selaelo Selota Sues Ringo Madlingozi For R90k For Missing Booked Gig

Jazz virtuoso Selaelo Selota has instructed his lawyers to pursue a R90,000 payment from Afro-soul superstar Ringo Madlingozi, following a cancelled performance that has left a significant deposit unreturned. The conflict stems from a booking made for Selota’s 25th-anniversary tour, specifically for the ‘One Country Concert’ scheduled for August in Polokwane.

The deal was initially struck with Madlingozi’s former representatives, Thikho Events Management, for a total fee of R180,000. A fifty per cent deposit was duly paid, a transaction confirmed by bank records. However, the arrangement unravelled when Madlingozi’s new management team, Ristar Records, sent an official termination letter. The communication stated that all contracts signed with the previous agency were null and void, placing Selota in a difficult financial position.

Background of the Ringo lawsuit

In the wake of the cancellation, Selota’s team attempted to find an amicable solution. Sibusiso Ketwa, Selota’s publicity manager, detailed the frustrating sequence of events. He revealed that Thikho Events initially gave assurances that the performance would go ahead despite the internal changes.

“Despite several follow-ups from Mr Selota, Thikho Events provided no substantive resolution,” Ketwa stated. “Mr Selota even submitted banking details to facilitate a refund should the performance not proceed. Subsequently, Mr Selota contacted Mr Madlingozi directly for clarification.”

This direct appeal to the Sondela singer himself yielded little progress. According to Ketwa, “Madlingozi stated that funds were with Thikho Events.” This left Selota caught between two parties, each pointing the finger of responsibility at the other. With the performance date come and gone and his funds seemingly in limbo, the jazz maestro felt he had no other recourse.

With all avenues for a peaceful resolution apparently exhausted, the decision was made to escalate the matter. The friendly phone calls and emails have ceased, replaced by formal correspondence from legal professionals. Ketwa confirmed the decisive move, stating,

“Having exhausted all attempts at amicable resolution with Thikho Events, Ristar Records, and Ringo Madlingozi, Mr Selota referred the matter to his legal team.”
