Senegal to Appeal CAS Ruling After Losing AFCON Title to Morocco

The Senegalese Football Federation has announced plans to take its fight to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) following a dramatic decision that stripped the nationa team of its Africa Cup of Nations title.

In a strongly worded statement, the federation described the ruling as unjust and damaging to the credibility of African football, vowing to pursue legal action to defend its position.

The Senegalese Football Federation condemns an unfair, unprecedented, and unacceptable decision that casts undermines African Football. “To defend its rights and the interests of Senegalese football, the Federation will, as soon as possible, initiate an appeal procedure before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne. The FSF reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the values of integrity and sporting justice and will keep the public informed of any developments in this matter.”

CAF Overturns Final Result

The controversy stems from a late ruling by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Appeal Board, which declared that Senegal had forfeited the AFCON final.

As a result, Morocco has been awarded a 3–0 victory, overturning Senegal’s earlier 1–0 win in the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 final.

The match, originally played on 18 January 2026 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, had initially seen Senegal crowned champions before the ruling reversal.

Appeal by Morocco Upheld

CAF confirmed that the appeal filed by the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football was successful, leading to the dismissal of the earlier decision by its Disciplinary Board.

According to CAF, Senegal’s conduct during the match breached tournament regulations, specifically provisions under Articles 82 and 84 of the competition rules.

The governing body ruled that the violation warranted forfeiture of the match, effectively handing the title to Morocco.

Senegal Condemns ‘Unacceptable’ Ruling

Reacting to the development, the Senegalese federation criticised the decision in the strongest terms, calling it “unfair, unprecedented and unacceptable.”

Officials argued that the outcome undermines the integrity of African football and insisted they would exhaust all legal avenues to challenge the verdict.

CAS Appeal Set to Follow

The federation confirmed that it will urgently file an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, seeking to overturn CAF’s decision.

It also pledged to keep supporters informed as the case progresses, reiterating its commitment to fairness, integrity, and sporting justice.

The case now sets the stage for a high-stakes legal battle that could determine the final outcome of one of the most dramatic AFCON controversies in recent years.
