Shebeshxt Now Faces 20 Charges After State Expands Case

Shebeshxt Court Case Expanded to 20 Charges

Popular Lekompo musician Shebeshxt is now facing 20 criminal charges, including attempted murder, robbery and illegal possession of firearms, after prosecutors expanded the case during his appearance in the Polokwane Regional Court.

The musician remains behind bars after his latest bail application was denied.

During the hearing, the court also addressed concerns about his health and arrangements for medical treatment while in detention.

Charges Increase Ahead of Trial

According to The Citizen, the 31-year-old musician is accused of a range of serious crimes allegedly committed between January 2022 and February 2025.

The charges include robbery with aggravating circumstances, attempted murder, assault, malicious damage to property, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, and discharging a firearm in a built-up area.

According to the state, 11 additional charges were added after the matter was transferred from the district court, increasing the total number of counts from nine to 20.

The expansion of the charge sheet drew attention from defence attorney Michael Khumalo, who questioned the sharp rise in charges compared to the earlier proceedings in Lebowakgomo.

Despite raising concerns, Khumalo told the court the defence would not oppose the state’s decision to add more counts, saying prosecutors were acting within their legal powers.

Defence Awaits Investigation Documents

Khumalo also informed the court that the defence team had still not received copies of the police docket and witness statements needed to begin preparing for trial.

He said the legal team had requested the documents while the case was still before the district court, especially because of the seriousness and number of allegations now facing the musician.

The prosecution acknowledged the delay and committed to providing the outstanding documents by next week.

Khumalo accepted the undertaking, while also revealing that an advocate would soon join the defence team to assist with the upcoming trial process.

Bail Appeal Underway

Shebeshxt remains behind bars after his latest bid for bail was unsuccessful.

His lawyer confirmed that preparations were underway to challenge the ruling, with the defence currently gathering documents required for an appeal application.

Khumalo told the court that the accused’s legal status could still change depending on the outcome of the planned appeal.

Court Considers Medical Concerns

During proceedings, the defence also raised concerns over Chauke’s health, describing his condition as a longstanding issue that required medical attention.

Khumalo requested that authorities ensure the musician receives proper medical care while in custody.

The court acknowledged the request and indicated that Chauke would temporarily remain at the Polokwane Police Station to allow easier access to healthcare services before any possible transfer to a correctional facility.

Matter Postponed

The case was postponed to 28 May 2026 to give the state time to hand over witness statements and other documents to the defence.

The court also confirmed that Chauke would not need to appear in person at this stage, while Khumalo continues to represent him as preparations for trial continue.
