Singer Tererai Denies Drug Addiction And Rehab Claims

In a fiery and emotional exclusive, songbird Tererai Mugwadi has slammed the growing chorus of voices suggesting she is in the grip of addiction and requires urgent rehabilitation. The controversy was ignited by a viral video from her recent performance at the Shoko Festival, which left fans and fellow artists alike concerned for her well-being. However, the singer has issued a blunt rebuttal, insisting she is being unfairly targeted.

Addressing the rumours head-on, Tererai expressed her frustration with the public diagnosis of her life. She maintains that her mental state is stable and that she is focused on self-improvement away from the spotlight’s glare. She challenged those spreading the narratives to approach her directly instead of conducting their business on social media.

She stated,

“Genuinely concerned people should call me or come into my inbox and ask what is really going on with me, if there is anything. I have come across several comments on social media from people making suggestions about my life. Most of these people are making these suggestions for personal clout but I am in the right space, trying my best to be a better person.”

A Call For Compassion From The Industry

While Tererai stands firm, others within the music industry have watched the unfolding drama with a heavy heart. Blogger and talent scout Plot Mhako publicly voiced his sympathy for the singer, sharing a brief history of her past challenges and advocating for a more compassionate response from the public. His sentiment was echoed by South Africa-based songstress Nox Guni, who urged the nation to “show her love.” In a more direct intervention, fellow artist Desmond “Stunner” Chideme explicitly suggested she seek help at the Matrix Rehabilitation Centre, a comment that has since fuelled further debate.

Tererai’s Unyielding Stance

Despite the calls for compassion and help, Tererai remains resolute. She questions the qualifications of her critics and draws a line between her professional mishaps and her private life, vowing that the online trolling will not break her spirit or dictate her choices.

She argued,

“The same people who are making noise and these suggestions are not psychologists, by the way. Whether I have a problem with alcoholism or not is up to the psychologist to determine, not these people who want to seek relevance with others.”

On the topic of the viral performance that started the furore, she was philosophical, noting,

“In showbiz, there are good and bad days on stage. This has been a trend to see me portrayed in a bad light. The same people have my contacts, why can’t they ask me and hear my side of the story?”

She confirmed that her passion for music remains undimmed, citing her recent work, but emphasised that her day job in the Central Business District currently occupies most of her time.
