South African police have initiated a massive search for a dangerous armed gang following a bus robbery that left two passengers dead and dozens robbed. The attack occurred on Wednesday night along the crucial N1 highway.
The ordeal began when a Delta bus, carrying 54 passengers from Zimbabwe, departed from Randfontein. After collecting more travellers in Midrand and Pretoria, the coach was proceeding towards its destination. The situation turned deadly approximately eight kilometres before the Nylplaza Tollgate. According to police reports, the calm of the evening was shattered when two men seated at the rear of the vehicle brandished firearms and began threatening fellow passengers.
Limpopo Police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, provided a chilling account of the events that unfolded. He stated,
“It is alleged that one male passenger, aged 30, attempted to disarm one of the suspects. Several other passengers also tried to intervene, showing immense bravery.”

This act of defiance, however, triggered a violent response from the assailants. Colonel Ledwaba continued,
“During the struggle, the suspects fired several shots inside the bus, fatally wounding the male passenger and an unknown female, estimated to be 25 years old.”

Following the shooting, the armed duo proceeded to rob the terrified passengers of their valuables, including an undisclosed sum of cash and numerous mobile phones. The chaos was further compounded by the appearance of a mysterious vehicle, which police believe was part of a premeditated plan. The colonel explained,
“Reports further indicate that an unknown vehicle, whose make, model and registration number are not yet known, had been following the bus and stopped behind it after the shooting. The suspects fled the scene in that vehicle, making their escape under the cover of darkness.”
