Springboks Coach Rassie Erasmus Speaks on Importance of SA ‘A’ Fixture Against Zimbabwe
Springboks head coach Rassie Erasmus says the upcoming South Africa ‘A’ clash against Zimbabwe will play a crucial role in building squad depth ahead of the Rugby World Cup.
“The match between the SA ‘A’ team and Zimbabwe will serve as a fantastic opportunity for both teams to achieve some of their objectives with the Rugby World Cup in mind, and from a South African point of view, we have seen the benefits of having an SA ‘A’ team playing against quality opposition,” he said.

Platform to Uncover New Talent
Erasmus highlighted the importance of the SA ‘A’ structure in developing players capable of stepping up to the senior national team.
“Players such as Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, Ruan Nortje, Grant Williams, Aphelele Fassi, and Elrigh Louw, among others, all played for the team in the early stages of their international careers, and have become important members of our squad since,” he said.
Casting the Net Wider
The Springboks coach said the upcoming fixture will allow selectors to assess more players who have impressed outside the current core group.
“This match will offer us another chance to give guys within our squad and others who have really put up their hands to prove what they can do against international opposition.
“We have done well to rotate our squad and give several players a chance in the last two seasons, but there are others who have performed really well outside of that group, who we would like to see in action, so we’ll be able to cast our net wider as we prepare for that encounter,” said Erasmus.
Timely Test for Zimbabwe
The clash comes at an important time for Zimbabwe, whose national team recently secured qualification for the 2027 Rugby World Cup—their first appearance at the tournament since 1991.
For the Sables, the encounter presents a valuable opportunity to test themselves against a strong South African setup as they prepare for the global showpiece.
Preparations Gather Pace
SA Rugby has indicated that the coach for the South Africa ‘A’ side will be announced in due course.
Meanwhile, the South Africa national rugby union team will continue their preparations with a second alignment camp scheduled for May, before Erasmus names his squad for the first official training camp in June.
With preparations intensifying, the SA ‘A’ fixture is expected to play a key role in shaping the team for the challenges ahead.
