Tavengwa Mukuhlani Lands Top ICC Role Ahead Of 2027 Cricket World Cup

Zimbabwe Cricket chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani has broken new ground in international cricket after being appointed Deputy Chairperson of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Mukuhlani becomes the first Zimbabwean to occupy the position, taking over from Imran Khwaja following his departure from the ICC Board.

ICC Chairman Welcomes Appointment

According to Zimbabwe Cricket, ICC Chairman Jay Shah congratulated Mukuhlani on his new role, highlighting his experience in cricket administration and knowledge of the global game.

“I warmly congratulate Tavengwa Mukuhlani on his appointment as Deputy Chair of the ICC.

His experience in cricket administration, understanding of the global game and commitment to its development will be invaluable to the ICC Board.”

Shah also described Mukuhlani’s election as an important moment for Zimbabwe, noting that he is the first Zimbabwean to serve as ICC Deputy Chair.

He further pointed to cricket’s return to the Olympic Games and the sport’s continued international expansion as areas where strong leadership will be important.

Mukuhlani Vows To Support Global Growth

Mukuhlani said he was honoured by the confidence shown in him by fellow ICC Board directors and pledged to work alongside Shah and other directors on the organisation’s priorities.

 “I am deeply honoured by the confidence placed in me by my fellow ICC Board Directors and grateful for the opportunity to serve as Deputy Chair of the ICC.”

He said the sport was entering an exciting phase, particularly with its return to the Olympic Games and efforts to expand cricket into new markets and audiences.

Mukuhlani added that he looked forward to supporting the ICC leadership while working to advance the interests of cricket globally.

Mukuhlani Brings Regional Experience

The new ICC Deputy Chairperson already holds several influential positions within cricket administration.

Besides leading Zimbabwe Cricket, Mukuhlani is the chairman of the Africa Cricket Association and represents Zimbabwe on the ICC Board.

He is also involved in several key ICC committees, serving on the Finance and Commercial Affairs Committee and the Nominations Committee while chairing the HR and Remuneration Committee.

His latest appointment gives Zimbabwe a higher-level presence in the ICC’s leadership at a time when the country is preparing for one of the biggest cricket events on the continent.
