Mamelodi Sundowns have added another exciting talent to their squad by completing the signing of Thabang Matuludi.
The defender joins the champions after several impressive seasons with Polokwane City. His arrival also ends growing speculation about his next move.
Matuludi has steadily built his reputation as one of South Africa’s most promising right backs. Now, he gets an opportunity to compete at one of Africa’s biggest clubs.
Sundowns strengthen their defensive options
The Pretoria giants officially confirmed Matuludi’s arrival while welcoming him to the Masandawana family.
“Mamelodi Sundowns are excited to welcome Thabang Matuludi to the Masandawana family! Yellow Nation, let’s welcome him in the comments,” the club announced.
Matuludi becomes Sundowns’ seventh signing during their latest recruitment drive. The club has already added Antonio van Wyk and Cassius Mailula.
Katlego Ntsabeleng, Siyands Ndlovu, Deano Van Rooyen and Thabo Cele have also joined the squad.
The transfer rewards Matuludi after several standout campaigns in the South African top flight. His consistency also helped him break into the national team setup.
Sundowns will now benefit from his defensive discipline and attacking ability. Meanwhile, Matuludi faces greater competition as he steps into a star-studded squad.
From Limpopo football to Bafana Bafana
Matuludi’s football story began far from the spotlight in Dennilton, Limpopo. He was born on 14 January 1999.
During his school years, he attended Kgahlanamorulana Secondary School in the Sekhukhune District.
Interestingly, Matuludi initially played as a winger before moving into defence. He eventually developed as a fullback while playing for his teacher’s club.
He later entered senior football through the ABC Motsepe League. King Born and The Dolphins featured among his early clubs.
Polokwane City recognised his potential in 2021 and brought him into their setup. That decision eventually transformed his career.
Matuludi became an important player as Polokwane City pushed towards promotion. The club eventually reached the top flight ahead of 2023/24.
He then continued developing against stronger opposition in the Betway Premiership. His performances soon attracted attention beyond club football.
His first senior Bafana Bafana call-up arrived for the 2024 COSAFA Cup. He subsequently made his international debut against Mozambique.
Matuludi played every minute of South Africa’s campaign during the tournament. His performances convinced national coach Hugo Broos to continue monitoring him.
Broos later selected him for South Africa’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations squad. The defender then reached another career milestone.
He earned selection for the 2026 FIFA World Cup squad. His journey has therefore taken him from grassroots football to the global stage.
Now, Sundowns represent the next chapter in Matuludi’s rapidly developing career. The move could provide another platform for him to establish himself among Africa’s elite defenders.
For the 27-year-old, the journey already represents an extraordinary achievement. His story also highlights the opportunities available through South Africa’s grassroots football system.
