Three police officers were injured after being ambushed by armed robbers in the early hours of Friday in the Mabelreign suburb of Harare.
The attack occurred around 12:20AM along Northolt Road near Divaris Makaharis School while the officers were on a stationary patrol.
Armed Attackers Strike from Darkness
According to a police internal report seen by ZimLive, three suspects wearing black balaclavas suddenly approached the patrol vehicle armed with a claw bar and a powerful torch.
Inspector Magidi, Constable Chihanga and Constable Nyamushamba were caught off guard as the attackers quickly surrounded the vehicle.
Rifle Jams During Attempted Defence
In an attempt to respond, Inspector Magidi instructed Constable Chihanga to open fire. However, the Heckler & Koch G3 rifle reportedly jammed, leaving the officers vulnerable.
The attackers then smashed the vehicle’s windscreen with a claw bar and intensified their assault.
Officers Injured in Violent Struggle
Constable Nyamushamba managed to escape from the driver’s seat but was struck on the shoulder during the attack.
Inspector Magidi attempted to confront the suspects but was hit on the forehead with a brick and collapsed.
Constable Chihanga fought back, striking one of the attackers with the rifle butt before managing to exit the vehicle, but he was later hit multiple times on the head.
Suspects Escape with Police Equipment
The robbers seized the G3 rifle along with its seven-round magazine before fleeing the scene in the police vehicle, a white Nissan Tiida.
They also took two mobile phones belonging to the officers.
Police Officers Hospitalised, Manhunt Underway
All three officers were taken to Parirenyatwa Hospital, where they are reported to be in stable condition.
Police have since launched a manhunt for the three suspects and are working to recover the stolen firearm, patrol vehicle and other items.
