Winter heating turned fatal for five members of the same family after they died in their sleep.

They reportedly inhaled toxic fumes from a fire brazier they had used to keep warm overnight.

The heartbreaking tragedy occurred in Mabasa Village, Zvishavane.

Police Confirm Incident

Zvishavane District Development Coordinator Darlington Chokera confirmed the deaths to The Chronicle.

He stated that investigations were underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

“We understand five people died at a homestead in the Mabasa area. The police have gone to attend the scene, and we will get more details then,” said Chokera.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Suspected in Tragic Deaths

The family had brought the fire brazier into their bedroom to combat the freezing winter temperatures.

However, authorities believe the enclosed space allowed carbon monoxide fumes to accumulate, leading to the fatal incident.

Postmortem Examinations Underway

The remains of the deceased were transported to Zvishavane District Hospital.

Postmortem examinations will be conducted there to officially confirm the cause of death.

Common but Dangerous Rural Practice

Using fire braziers for indoor heating is a widespread and deeply ingrained practice in rural Zimbabwe during the winter season.

Many families rely on these portable fire sources—locally known as “mbaura”—to keep warm when temperatures drop, especially in homes without access to modern heating systems.

While fire braziers provide essential warmth, their use indoors poses serious health risks due to the release of carbon monoxide, a colorless and odorless gas that can build up quickly in poorly ventilated spaces.

Carbon monoxide poisoning is often called the “silent killer” because it can cause unconsciousness and death without warning.
