Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube will deliver the 2026 Mid-Term Budget Review in Harare on Thursday. The statement is expected to focus on preserving Zimbabwe’s economic stability.
The Treasury chief will also evaluate economic performance during the year’s first six months. In addition, he will outline fiscal priorities for the remaining months of 2026.
Experts expect focus on fiscal discipline
Tax expert Mr Simbarashe Hamudi said the review will measure progress on implementing the ZiG290 billion national budget.
“It is a budget of around ZiG290 billion and it means as a country we have to use the resources in a manner that creates confidence. It is all about how the revenues have been achieved and, if so, the extent to which spending has remained within the limits approved by Parliament to stamp out excessive borrowing, which might lead to inflation,” he said.
Meanwhile, Professor Albert Makochekanwa from the University of Zimbabwe urged Government to protect recent economic gains. He pointed to lower inflation, currency stability and stronger foreign currency inflows.
“Single-digit inflation, a stable currency and increased foreign currency inflows remain key milestones. There is a need to consolidate these gains and sustain the resilience that has attracted the interest of multilateral financiers. This budget review must advance policies that preserve stability for the remainder of the year,” he said.
Policy consistency remains key
Governance and economics expert Mr Jonathan Dube said consistent policies will support Zimbabwe’s five percent growth target. He warned against changing direction while current measures continue delivering positive results.
“The current situation reflects confidence-building policies aimed at stabilising the economy. To maintain this trajectory, there is a need to sustain the current policy direction without deviating from the set targets,” he said.
The Mid-Term Budget Review will be presented before Parliament. It is also expected to shape the 2027 National Budget Strategy Paper. Furthermore, it will support the continued implementation of the National Development Strategy Two (NDS2).
