Two Harare Men Arrested For Kidnapping A 14-Year-Old Runaway Schoolgirl

Two Harare men have been arrested for kidnapping a 14-year-old girl after she ran away from home after a fight over $6.

A routine family disagreement over a mere US$6 spiralled into a harrowing kidnapping incident that has left a Harare community in shock, culminating in the arrest of two local men.

The ordeal began within the confines of the teenager’s own home. The 14-year-old pupil, whose identity is being protected, found herself gripped with fear after a dispute concerning the missing money. Fearing retribution from her mother, who accused her of taking the cash from her father’s wallet, the young girl made the fateful decision to run away from the safety of her family. She subsequently spent a night wandering the streets, vulnerable and alone.

Her plight took a sinister turn when an acquaintance spotted her. This friend, however, was accompanied by Bradwell Hokota, aged 21, and Munashe Zirikwa, aged 19, both from the Langford Crest Breeders Farm area in Ushewekunze.

Instead of ensuring her safe return, the two men took the girl to their own residence. Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, the Harare provincial police spokesperson, provided official confirmation of the events, stating,

“Police arrested two men in connection with the kidnapping of a girl aged 14.”

As the teenager was being held at the men’s home, her own mother was gripped with a different kind of fear. Realising her daughter was missing and understanding the grave dangers a young girl could face, she immediately contacted the authorities. Her swift action in filing an official missing person’s report set the wheels of justice in motion. The police response was prompt, leading investigators directly to the residence of Hokota and Zirikwa.

The situation was brought to a head not by a dramatic chase, but by the sharp instincts of a Housing Department official. While details of the official’s specific role remain part of the ongoing investigation, it was their alertness that proved crucial in detecting an element of fraud connected to the case, ultimately helping to secure the men’s detention.

The two suspects were subsequently arrested at their Langford Crest home without incident, bringing the teenager’s terrifying ordeal to an end. She has since been safely reunited with her profoundly relieved family.
