Two Killed, Multiple Injured After Zhongtong Bus Collides With Toyota Hilux

Two people were killed and multiple others were left injured after a Zhongtong bus collided with a Toyota Hilux because of a cow.

A routine evening journey turned into a scene of unimaginable horror on the Gweru-Zvishavane Road this past Sunday, as a collision between a passenger bus and a utility vehicle claimed two lives and left a trail of devastation. The Zimbabwe Republic Police have confirmed the fatal road traffic accident, which occurred near the 10-kilometre peg at approximately half past eight in the evening, sending shockwaves through the local community.

According to official reports, the chain of events began when a large Zhongtong bus, transporting forty-five passengers, struck a cow that had wandered onto the roadway. The impact caused the bus driver to lose control, sending the massive vehicle careening into the path of oncoming traffic.

“A Zhongtong Bus carrying 45 passengers hit a cow resulting in the bus encroaching onto the oncoming lane.”

This set the stage for a devastating head-on collision with a Toyota Hilux that was travelling in the opposite direction.

The direct impact of the two vehicles was severe. Tragically, both occupants of the Toyota Hilux were pronounced dead at the scene. Of the forty-five bus passengers, nineteen sustained injuries of varying degrees. Emergency services rushed to the accident site, where the grim process of recovery began.

The silence of the night was broken by sirens and the desperate cries of the injured, as paramedics worked tirelessly to stabilise victims before transportation to medical facilities. The bodies of the two deceased were conveyed to the Gweru Provincial Hospital mortuary, where post-mortem examinations are scheduled to be conducted.

Community Reels as Investigation Continues

The injured, a group of nineteen individuals, were promptly admitted to the Gweru Provincial Hospital for urgent treatment. Hospital authorities have not yet released the conditions of the survivors, but the high number of casualties has placed a significant strain on local medical resources.

The ZRP has launched a full investigation into the precise circumstances leading to the accident.
