Injured Victims Taken To Hospital
The bodies of the two victims were taken to Bindura Hospital for postmortem examinations, while the three injured people were referred to Howard Hospital for treatment.
The police confirmation comes amid recent scrutiny of mining activities in Bindura, where authorities have raised concerns about compliance with mining and environmental regulations.
Government Previously Shut Down Bindura Mining Operation
In August, Mines and Mining Development Minister Polite Kambamura ordered Oxidise Mine and its joint venture partner, Botha Mine, to suspend operations following complaints about their mining practices.
The government cited concerns over environmental degradation, infrastructure and potential health risks to residents living nearby.
Kambamura visited the site after receiving complaints from surrounding communities and reportedly found a thick cloud of dust covering the operation.
The minister also raised concerns about the mine’s proximity to residential areas, saying the operators lacked essential approvals and had no rehabilitation plan for the damaged landscape.
Minister Warns Miners Over Regulatory Compliance
During the inspection, Kambamura said mining companies were expected to secure the necessary approvals before beginning operations and to address the environmental damage caused by their activities.
“I am here today after receiving complaints from the communities of substandard mining practices happening here and environmentally unsafe mining practices. We expect our miners to have all the paperwork, all approvals before commencing any mining operations. As you can see, there was no approval to this mining operation. They are actually cutting down mountains. By the end of the day there is no rehabilitation plan to these mountains that have been degraded, so we have shut down this operation from now and we have summoned the operators to report to our offices for further investigations,” Minister Kambamura said.
The operators were ordered to report to the ministry for further investigations into the concerns raised.
