First Victim Fails to Return Home
The first victim, 26-year-old Takudzwa Gumunyu, was reported missing after he failed to return home from work on Monday evening.
His family became worried when he did not arrive at his usual time and immediately began searching for him. The distressing search ended when they were informed of a body discovered in a bushy area.
His mother, Tarisai Gumunyu, said the family had expected him home around 7pm but grew increasingly anxious as the night went on.
“We heard rumours that there was a dead body in the bush. When we went there, police were already on the scene and were still trying to identify the person,” she said.
She said officers later confirmed that the body was that of her son. He had sustained visible injuries, including wounds at the back of the head and a deep cut behind the ear.
Injured Woman Found Lying in Grass
As the community was still reeling from the first death, another resident, Bridget Dzingirai, was discovered injured early Tuesday morning after being found lying in grassland.
She was rescued by resident Tinashe Matanda, who found her in a weakened state and helped take her home before alerting neighbours. Community members later contributed funds to transport her to hospital for treatment.
Matanda said he found her unable to walk or speak clearly and acted quickly to assist her.
Dzingirai said she remembers little about what happened. She said she was walking alone at night when she noticed unidentified individuals near her before losing consciousness.
“I only remember walking around 9pm. I saw a man behind me and another in front, and then I blacked out,” she said, adding that she sustained injuries to her left hand.
Second Body Discovered in Grass Area
The tragedy deepened when residents discovered the body of a 21-year-old woman, Panashe, who worked as a hairdresser, in a grassy area near residential homes.
The discovery was made by locals who were clearing vegetation close to their houses. She is believed to have been walking home from work on Monday night when she died.
Her body was later removed by police for post-mortem examination as investigations continue.
Another Survivor Speaks After Attack
Another resident, Mr Isaac Nenyai, is also recovering after surviving an attack during the same night. He is currently receiving medical treatment for his injuries.
He said he was walking home with groceries when he encountered a suspicious figure before being struck and losing consciousness.
“I was hit on the head and back and later found myself in the bush in the morning,” he said.
Police Investigations Continue
Police attended all scenes and have since conveyed the bodies for post-mortem examinations as part of ongoing investigations into the incidents.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the cases are linked, but residents believe the attacks may be connected due to their timing and location.
Community Living in Fear
The incidents have left the Ziko community shaken, with residents expressing fear over their safety, particularly when moving around at night.
