Assignment Context

UNICEF Zimbabwe’s Health Section is seeking two passionate and motivated Public Health Interns to support integrated efforts in maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health (MNCAH), immunization, and HIV prevention among children. The role also offers the chance to engage in policy dialogue, data analysis, and coordination of community health systems and emergency health responses.

This assignment is ideal for early-career public health professionals looking to gain experience in a dynamic UN environment while contributing to impactful public health initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

As a Public Health Intern under the supervision of the Health Specialist (MNCH), your duties will include:

  • Participating in project coordination for MNCAH, immunization, and HIV programming.

  • Supporting primary health care (PHC) initiatives, reviewing relevant documents, and attending strategic discussions.

  • Assisting in the collection, organization, and basic analysis of health data with mentorship.

  • Joining selected field visits to observe implementation and capture lessons learned.

  • Contributing to the Health Section’s planning and review processes.

  • Taking minutes during section meetings and supporting internal coordination.

  • Supporting preparations for multisectoral meetings and stakeholder engagements.

  • Documenting insights from technical discussions and working groups.

  • Assisting in the creation of knowledge products such as briefs, presentations, and reports.

  • Performing other learning-focused support tasks as needed.

Expected Outputs

  • Increased understanding of MNCAH programming and policy environments.

  • Summaries of key PHC and RMNCH documents to support internal learning.

  • Organized datasets and basic visualizations for health analysis.

  • Observation reports from field visits highlighting program challenges and successes.

  • Contributions to planning and reporting documents aligned with UNICEF’s results-based management.

  • Meeting notes and improved internal team coordination support.

  • Engagement in stakeholder and policy discussions.

  • Draft knowledge products for technical communication and advocacy.

  • Evidence of growing initiative, adaptability, and responsibility in task execution.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Age: 18–80

  • Nationality: Must be a Zimbabwean national or legal resident

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field AND currently enrolled in a Master of Public Health (MPH) program

  • Languages: Fluent English required; knowledge of local languages is an asset

  • Experience: No prior experience required, though 1 year of relevant exposure is an advantage

Desired Skills and Competencies

  • Interest or background in RMNCH, immunization, health systems, or community health.

  • Excellent communication and writing skills.

  • Strong planning, organization, and time-management capabilities.

  • Proficiency in MS Office tools and basic data analysis software.

  • Capacity to work independently and in multicultural teams with respect for diversity.

  • Passion for UNICEF’s mission and the role of volunteerism in development.

  • This is a national assignment, and selected interns will be responsible for securing their own housing and living needs.
