Shange’s family said she passed away in the early hours of Monday at a hospital in KwaZulu-Natal following an illness.

In a heartfelt message, her daughter Nonhle Thema shared the news publicly:

The family later released a formal statement confirming her death and celebrating her life.

A Trailblazer in Pageantry

Before her acting career, Shange broke barriers in the world of beauty pageants. In 1972, she became the first Black woman to represent South Africa at the Miss World 1972 in London.

She had earlier made history by becoming the first Black woman to win the national title at a time when the pageant had not yet fully integrated, marking a significant milestone in the country’s cultural landscape.

Celebrated Acting Career

Shange later transitioned into acting, where she built a lasting legacy on screen. She became a household name through her performances in productions such as uDeliwe, Shaka Zulu, and Muvhango.

Her powerful portrayals earned her widespread recognition and admiration from audiences across generations.

Honours and Lasting Legacy

In recognition of her contribution to the arts, Shange received lifetime achievement awards from the South African Film and Television Awards and the Simon Mabhunu Sabela Awards.

Her family said her legacy would live on through her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
