Two Vietnamese Women Remanded In Custody For Human Trafficking
Two Vietnamese women have been remanded in custody by the Harare Magistrates’ Court on allegations of human trafficking and overstaying in Zimbabwe. The case was revealed in a bulletin issued by the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ).
Allegations Of Recruitment And Abuse
The accused are identified as 28-year-old Huu Dao Phan and 26-year-old Thi My Quyen Duong. Prosecutors allege that the pair lured a fellow Vietnamese national to Zimbabwe in August 2025.
According to the NPAZ, the victim was promised lucrative employment.
“Sometime in August 2025, the accused persons recruited the complainant who is also a Vietnamese national to come for work in Zimbabwe as a massage therapist promising her a lucrative salary,” read the official statement.
The complainant arrived in Zimbabwe on 14 August 2025. It is alleged that the two women confiscated her passport soon after her arrival.
Prosecutors further allege that the victim was forced to work in several massage parlours without receiving any salary.
The NPAZ bulletin noted:
“The accused persons forced her to work while she was sick and assaulted her all over the body leaving her with bruises on her face.”
The injuries sustained eventually led the victim to file a police report.
Immigration Violations
The case also involves allegations of immigration breaches. The accused are said to have overstayed in Zimbabwe after their visas expired on 13 September 2025.
The NPAZ explained:
“On the second charge, the accused persons are alleged to have overstayed in Zimbabwe beyond the stipulated 30 days on their visa and failed to renew their permits upon expiry.”
This has resulted in charges of illegal stay in the country, in addition to the human trafficking allegations.
Court Proceedings
The two women appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Court and were remanded in custody. They are due back in court on 26 September 2025 for routine remand proceedings.
The NPAZ confirmed the court’s ruling, stating:
“The duo was remanded in custody and will be back in court on the 26th of September for routine remand.”
The matter remains under investigation, with law enforcement and immigration authorities working together on the case.
