Volkswagen Recalls Over 300 Amarok Bakkies

VW Amarok Recall Over Braking Defect
Volkswagen South Africa has recalled more than 300 Amarok bakkies manufactured between 10 January and 12 June 2025. The vehicles have been flagged for a braking defect that could compromise driver safety.
According to VW, the problem may result in a loss of braking assistance, forcing drivers to apply much more effort when stopping their vehicles. This poses a significant safety concern, particularly during emergencies.
The NCC has encouraged Amarok owners to visit any authorised Volkswagen dealership, where repairs will be carried out free of charge.
“Product recalls are vital to ensure safety, and prompt action is essential,” the NCC stated, noting that it will oversee the recall in line with the Consumer Protection Act.
This follows another recall earlier in the year, when VW pulled back certain Polo models over rear axle and airbag defects.
Mercedes-Benz Recall Targets Steering Fault
Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz South Africa has also been forced to issue a recall for 102 luxury vehicles sold locally between 2022 and 2025. The recall affects 98 GLC-254 models and four EQE-295 models.
The problem stems from a steering coupling defect, where the bolting may not have been secured to the required standard. Over time, this flaw could lead to the loosening of the mechanical connection between the steering wheel and steering rack.
The NCC raised alarm over the potential risk, saying:
“In this case, the mechanical connection between the steering wheel and steering rack might loosen over time. As a result of the defect, this might lead to a loss of the vehicle’s steerability, increasing the risk of an accident.”
Essentially, drivers could lose the ability to steer their cars, creating a serious safety hazard.
NCC Urges Swift Action From Owners
The NCC has stressed the importance of motorists responding quickly to recall notices. Both manufacturers have assured affected customers that repairs will be performed at no cost.
