VP Chiwenga Issues Warning Over Skin-Lightening Products In Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe Government Targets Skin-Lightening Lotions And Body-Enhancement Products

Zimbabwe’s government is stepping up its crackdown on skin-lightening lotions and body-enhancement products amid warnings that some could pose serious health risks. Vice President Constantino Chiwenga says authorities are determined to protect consumers from potentially harmful products marketed to change skin colour and body shape.

The warning was delivered at the Second Consumer Annual Conference, where Chiwenga raised concerns about the effects of products used for cosmetic purposes, including the potential risk of skin cancer.

Chiwenga Warns Of Health Risks From Cosmetic Products

According to ZiFM Stereo News, Chiwenga said the government wants to address the dangers associated with products promoted as solutions for changing physical appearance.

The concerns include skin-lightening lotions and body-enhancement products that may expose users to harmful substances. The Vice President also highlighted the need to protect public health and uphold consumer dignity.

The announcement was reported by ZiFM Stereo News on Tuesday, 13 October 2026.

Government Steps Up Consumer Protection Efforts

The government’s latest warning signals a stronger focus on the safety of cosmetic products available to consumers. However, the statement did not identify specific brands, announce particular enforcement measures or provide details about possible penalties.

Consumers concerned about the safety of skin-lightening lotions and body-enhancement products should seek reliable information about their ingredients and potential risks.
