Controversial businessman and murder accused Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala will appear in the Johannesburg High Court on Thursday. Pretrial proceedings will resume in a case involving 25 charges.
Matlala appears with his wife Tsakanj Matlala and three co-accused. The others are Musa Kekana, Tiego Floyd Mabusela and Zandile Nthabiseng Nzama.
The group faces 25 charges, including 11 counts of attempted murder. The charges relate to three shooting incidents between August 2022 and January 2024.
The state alleges the accused orchestrated a shooting. Prosecutors also claim they laundered money linked to the plot. Furthermore, they allegedly used a fraudulent invoice to conceal the funds.
Legal Team Raises Access Concerns
Previously, Matlala’s lawyers sought a court order for consultations. They struggled to access him after his transfer to Kokstad.
Authorities moved him from Kgosi Mampuru II Prison to eBongweni Supermax. His legal team argued the move disrupted trial preparations.
NPA spokesperson Magaboke Mohlatlole confirmed the court granted relief. The court ordered prison officials to allow face-to-face consultations. It also permitted the exchange of documents for trial preparation.
The order applies from 16 to 17 February 2026. The court also allowed the defence to bring a laptop for consultations.
Earlier, Advocate Anneline van den Heever raised concerns about delays. She said distance and large volumes of documents complicated consultations.
“It will take a long time to have a proper consultation with him. At least when it comes to the expert issues, we will sit with him and have direct contact with him,” she told the court.
Alleged Assassination Plot and Shooting Cases
Matlala faces charges linked to an alleged failed assassination attempt. The alleged target was his former girlfriend, Tebogo Thobejane.
He also faces charges linked to the shootings of Joe Sibanyoni. Music producer Seunkie “DJ Vetteys” Mokubong was also allegedly targeted.
In recent months, the case faced delays and logistical challenges. Co-accused lawyers also raised concerns about client access.
Previously, the court postponed the matter for further consultations. The defence planned to engage Correctional Services about a possible transfer.
