Vusimuzi Matlala Denied Bail In Tebogo Thobejane Shooting Case

Alleged mastermind Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala has been denied bail in the Johannesburg High Court for his involvement in the shooting of his ex, Tebogo Thobejane. The decision upholds a previous ruling, ensuring the high-profile figure stays behind bars while he answers for a litany of severe charges, most notably the attempted murder of his ex-lover, celebrated actress Tebogo Thobejane.

The case has sent shockwaves through the nation, with the court hearing harrowing details of a brazen daylight attack on the busy N1 highway near Sandton in 2023. The actress was reportedly wounded by a gunshot to her foot during the terrifying ambush. The web of allegations surrounding Matlala extends far beyond this single act, encompassing a sinister plot to kill, complex financial crimes, and accusations of obstructing the police investigation.

Matlala does not face these grave accusations alone. He appeared alongside four co-accused, including his wife, Tsakani Matlala, and two alleged hitmen, Musa Kekana and Tiego Floyd Mabusela. The group stands collectively charged with attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, fraud, and money laundering.

While Matlala’s plea was denied, his wife, Tsakani, had previously been granted bail of R20,000. Another co-accused, Nthabiseng Nzama, saw her bail set at R10,000. In a surprising twist, the two alleged contract killers, Kekana and Mabusela, have since withdrawn their own applications for bail entirely.

The presiding magistrate was unequivocal in the judgment, highlighting the seriousness of the accusations and the perceived threat Matlala could pose if released. The court found the state’s case against him to be compelling, with evidence suggesting he was the central architect of the violent plot.

A court official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, clarified the rationale, stating,

“The court found that it would not be in the interests of justice to release the first accused at this stage. The evidence presented by the prosecution suggests a deep involvement in orchestrating the alleged crimes, presenting a significant flight risk and a potential danger to witnesses.”
