Former Zimbabwe Warriors striker Shingi Kawondera has opened up about one of the darkest chapters of his life, claiming he was scammed by the late socialite and businessman Genius “Ginimbi” Kadungure.
Speaking during a revealing episode of The Sportlight with Yvonne Mangunda, aired Thursday, 10 July 2025, Kawondera reflected on the painful loss of the fortune he earned during his football career, which saw him playing in top leagues across Poland, Cyprus, Turkey, and South Africa.
When asked what happened to all his earnings, Kawondera admitted the blame rested with him, for trusting the wrong people.
“I don’t need to blame anyone because at the end of the day, it was me who trusted the wrong people,” he said.
But then he got specific. The ex-footballer claimed he had handed Ginimbi seed capital to start his famous gas business and was originally listed as a director of the company. Kawondera suggested that he’d invested in the company because of his ex-wife Marry Mubaiwa who was still his girlfriend at the time.
“Pane nyaya yandogara ndichibvunzwa nevanhu, nyaya yampfanha Ginimbi. Imari yangu, hakusi kunyepa kana kuita sei. I invested in that gas company. Kuti itange yanga iri mari yangu. I was the director, but Genius zvaakaita anga ane hukama na Marry (Mubaiwa),” Kawondera narrated.
Kawondera claimed that Ginimbi faked signatures and officially took over the company, cutting him out entirely. He said Ginimbi then sought protection from powerful figures, making it impossible for him to fight back, legally or otherwise.
“So akanofojera ma signature angu ndobva achinja ndokubva azviita director wecompany. Then he ran from me ndokubva aenda kuma powerful people. I couldn’t do anything,” he added.
When the host cautioned him about speaking ill of the dead, Kawondera stood firm. He said Ginimbi didn’t need to defend himself, because even his own family knew what happened.
“I don’t need him to defend. Everybody knows from their family hapana asingazvizive,” Shingi Kawondera claimed.
