WATCH: Rescue Operations Underway After Boat Capsizes In Lake Kariba

A major search and rescue operation is currently underway on Lake Kariba after a passenger ferry capsized.

The vessel reportedly ran into turbulence before overturning as it was transporting passengers across the lake.

The exact number of people on board and the number of casualties remain unclear.

Rescue Teams Race To Lake

The district Civil Protection Unit (CPU) has deployed teams to the affected area to assist with the rescue operation.

Other well-wishers who have boats have also joined the effort to search for passengers and provide emergency assistance.

A helicopter has been deployed to support the operation from the air.

Some passengers have already been rescued and taken to safety, according to information from the scene.

Unconfirmed reports suggest the ferry may have been carrying more than 100 passengers when it capsized.

The vessel reportedly provides transport services between Kariba and several islands and fishing camps.

These include popular destinations such as Charara and Gache Gache.

A source in Kariba said the situation remained unclear as rescue teams headed into the lake.

“The Lake Captain and the district CPU have ventured into the lake as the boat is currently sinking. Details are still sketchy,” the source said.

The development has raised concerns about passengers who may still be trapped or missing.

Police have not yet confirmed how many people may have died in the incident.

Authorities are also yet to establish the official number of passengers who were aboard the ferry.

The rescue operation remains active, with more information expected as emergency teams assess the situation and account for those on board.
