The Pashonlink bus approached the 26-kilometre peg, and passengers saw smoke fumes from the engine. The diver halted the bus to investigate the source of the smoke. When the driver opened the engine cover near the passengers’ door, a fireball burst from the engine and consumed the bus.

The driver and 57 passengers leapt out through the door and emergency exit windows, and eight others remained trapped. They burnt beyond recognition in the bus.

This week, relatives, friends, fellow congregants and officials went to Rusape General Hospital for the handover of the remains of the accident victims. MDC President Douglas Mwonzora and Herentals owner Innocent Benza also attended the sombre event.

Some of the Pashonlink bus fire survivors attended the handover ceremony to pay their last respects.

One survivor, Roselyn Mutaramutswa, told Pahasha TV that the Pashonlink bus was faulty. It was overheating even on the way to the pilgrimage, and it was not fixed. It had the same problem on returning. She revealed that the bus made three stops, and on the fourth, it burst into flames.

Roselyn’s face is now covered in burn scars, and she disclosed that she got burnt trying to save her children and escape from the raging inferno.
