Zimbabwe’s political and religious spaces recently collided following remarks by Vice President Constantino Chiwenga. His sermon about King Hezekiah quickly stirred debate across the nation. Some listeners heard a spiritual message, while others sensed a political warning.
A Sermon or a Subtle Political Signal?
Chiwenga’s message centered on holding onto power without purpose. He referenced King Hezekiah, who asked for more time yet misused it. Consequently, many Zimbabweans interpreted this as a metaphor for leadership and succession.
Some critics linked the sermon to ongoing tensions around “CAB number 3.” They argued that Chiwenga spoke in coded language. According to this view, the sermon targeted political leadership rather than offering spiritual guidance.
However, others strongly disagreed. They insisted Chiwenga spoke purely as a church member. They argued that biblical teachings often address power, humility, and accountability. Therefore, they saw no political motive behind his words.
Media Reactions and Public Interpretation
Prominent journalist Hopewell Chin’ono offered a sharply different perspective. He claimed the sermon reflected deeper political struggles. Furthermore, he suggested that the pulpit has become part of Zimbabwe’s succession battlefield.
Chin’ono argued that Chiwenga’s parables were deliberate and strategic. He described them as warnings directed at the President. Additionally, he framed the message as a critique of leaders who cling to power.
He emphasized that history often speaks through coded messages. In his view, sermons now carry political meaning due to rising tensions. As a result, he interpreted the Hezekiah story as a warning about time and leadership.
Meanwhile, the public remains divided. Some see a pastor delivering scripture. Others see a politician navigating power dynamics. Ultimately, Chiwenga’s sermon has blurred the line between faith and politics in Zimbabwe.
