US$50 Repair Deal Turns Into US$6,000 Theft In Waterfalls After Accident

A 37-year-old Waterfalls man lost his vehicle after handing over his car keys to strangers following a minor road accident, with police confirming that the suspects drove off with the vehicle and other valuables worth about US$6,000 (approximately R111,000).

The incident occurred on Sunday, 6 April 2026, in Waterfalls, Harare, after what began as an agreement to repair damage from an accident ended in a suspected theft.

Police identified the victim as Simbarashe Mawodze.

Accident Turns Into Alleged Theft

According to H-Metro, Police say Mawodze accidentally reversed his vehicle into a silver Toyota Fortuner carrying two men.

After the collision, the parties agreed that Mawodze would pay for repairs to the Fortuner.

The group then drove to Patel Shopping Centre, where Mawodze intended to collect US$50 (approximately R925) to pay for the damages.

Both vehicles were parked at the shopping centre.

Mawodze told the two men that he was going inside to collect the money.

The men demanded that he leave the car keys with them as a guarantee that he would return.

He agreed.

Mawodze returned after about five minutes.

His vehicle and the two men were gone.

Police Confirm Investigation

Harare Provincial Police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the case and said investigations were underway.

Inspector Chakanza said:

“Police are investigating a theft of a motor vehicle in Waterfalls. The victim was involved in an accident with the suspect. Total value stolen is US$6,000.”
