‘We haven’t won here in a while’: Springboks star Eben Etzebeth on Dublin clash

Springbok lock Eben Etzebeth, who reached 139 Test caps against France two weeks ago, said the Boks are eagerly anticipating Saturday’s Castle Lager Outgoing Tour clash with Ireland at the Aviva Stadium. He noted that it would be a “nice opportunity” to change their fortunes in Dublin, where South Africa last claimed a Test victory in 2012.

The sides last met during the Castle Lager Incoming Series in South Africa in July 2024, with both teams securing one win each. However, Etzebeth emphasised that facing Ireland at home presents a very different challenge against a “great team”.

“They’ve been in the top three of the world rankings for the last couple of years, so they are a quality outfit and we are looking forward to this game,” said Etzebeth.

“When we received the calendar at the beginning of the year, this fixture was definitely one that stood out, so we’re excited. It’s going to be a good match. We haven’t won here in a while, so it’s a nice opportunity for us.”

Etzebeth dismissed suggestions that the 19-16 defeat to Ireland in Dublin in 2022 would motivate the Boks to chase revenge, saying: “This is a completely different challenge. That was over a year and a half ago. A lot can happen in rugby in one week, and many things have changed since then.”

Irish Insights and Disciplinary Updates

Asked about the contributions of Irish-based players RG Snyman and Jean Kleyn, along with assistant coaches Felix Jones and Jerry Flannery – both former Ireland internationals – Etzebeth said they may offer useful knowledge but stressed that Ireland would adapt.

“We have quite a few foreigners in our management group, but we don’t see them as such – we see them as part of the Springboks, and we get along very well with all of them,” said Etzebeth.

“And obviously, guys like RG and Jean have more insight into the Irish, but it’s professional rugby, and Ireland will be smart and probably change a few things.”

Springbok assistant coach Mzwandile Stick confirmed that Franco Mostert, who received a red card in the 12th minute of the match against Italy last week, will face a disciplinary hearing within the next two days. Lood de Jager, red-carded a fortnight ago against France, will also appeal his suspension.

The Springboks began their on-field preparations on Monday afternoon. The Test is scheduled for 19h40 (SA time) and will be broadcast live and exclusively on SuperSport.
